Building Science 2 (BLD 61303)

Abstract:
The Building Science II module provides an understanding of building acoustics through history, practical measurements, sound insulation, reverberation and noise in relation to building design and construction. We are exposed to day lighting strategies, permanent and supplementary artificial lighting of interior, various types of artificial light sources and simple calculation to determine uniform lighting for interiors. The module is integrated to Architecture Design Studio 5 to enable us to demonstrate our knowledge and understanding through application.

Project 1: Auditorium – A Case Study on Acoustic Design

This project aims to expose and introduce us on the actual auditorium design layout that can influence the effectiveness of the public address (PA) system in a particular hall. In a group of eight, we conducted a simple research on the auditorium of PICC in Putrajaya. We have obtained the layout and sections to show the sound path within the building, and identified the acoustic materials.

The slideshow below shows our written report.

Project 2: Project Integration

This project is integrated with the final project for Architecture Design Studio 5 and aims to measure our understanding towards the energy efficiency on buildings by integrating day lighting into lighting design through Permanent and Supplementary Artificial Lighting of Interior (PSALI) in our community library. We are also required to determine the types and number of lamps to be used and to produce a lighting contour and lighting electrical ceiling layout for the selected spaces in our individual building design. The analysis is presented in two sheets of A2 presentation boards and a written report.
