Tales of Three Cities (ARC 3113)
Introduction:
Tales of Three Cities aims to inspire students towards fundamental knowledge and skills necessary to comprehend urban places through the theme ‘Tropical Cities’ which focuses on cities in Malaysia such as Kuala Lumpur, George Town in Penang and Kuching. The case study cities will be studied for the historic social significance over urban planning and design, the application of contemporary theories on to design and practice and the spatial experience being the student as an explorer in the city.

Project 2A: Journal on Urban Sketches and Photographs
This assignment requires us to document the city spaces within a site area. This was a location based study to establish the relationships and roles of the three urban design elements, especially focusing on the urban structuring principles. We then captured interesting and meaningful photographs related to tangible or spatial, and intangible or social contexts of a selected location in Kuala Lumpur. The sketches and photographs are supported by one or more sentences to explain the meaningful and interesting spaces.
For this assignment, the sketches and photographs were captured along the journey from Central Market to Petaling Street. The slideshow below shows the compilation of the journal submitted for this assignment.

Project 1: Ideas and Theories in Urbanism
In a group of eight, we were required to choose a case study city and to explore the city in both historical and contemporary phases. We analyzed KL Sentral, Kuala Lumpur in the aspect of conceptual translation of the urban design theory. The understanding of urban design comes from underpinning the theories into tangible urban structures of a built form, activity and movement patterns.
The slideshow below shows the digital presentation of the salient and insightful ideas and theories that contributed the spatial form of KL Sentral, Kuala Lumpur.
Project 2B: Mapping the Townscape
In a group of five, this project aims to coin our own theory for our selected city of Petaling Street and Central Market in Kuala Lumpur. The objectives are to characterize the urban forms through the preparation of figure ground diagrams, to establish the significance of serial vision by studying the visual cues in urban design and views and vistas through Gordon Cullen’s serial visions, and to illustrate the urban distinctive character by coining our theory following significant patterns between the typologies of form and visual qualities.
The slideshow below shows our digital presentation of our submission and a video clip showing the intangible ways of the use of space between Petaling Street and Central Market.
